Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major honors show approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
