The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
